In light of numerous crises, scandals, and challenges in the economic and financial world, it became increasingly clear to Hans Küng that the global economy urgently needs an ethical framework. The Global Ethic Institute is therefore committed to promoting decent and value-oriented business practices, based on Hans Küng’s concept of a global ethic and the vision of entrepreneur and founder Karl Schlecht. The Institute was established for this purpose in April 2012 by the Global Ethic Foundation in collaboration with the University of Tübingen and the Karl Schlecht Foundation.

Tübingen is a leading international university that promotes academic freedom and freedom of research, freedom of expression and speech, equality for all people, and respect for human dignity—regardless of origin, religion, social status, gender, or sexual orientation. The University of Tübingen is actively committed to the positive development of society, peaceful coexistence, and sustainable development. As an affiliated institute, the Global Ethic Institute is closely linked to the University through teaching and research, as well as by its statutes.

Prof. Dr. Karla Pollmann
President of the University of Tübingen
»The vision of the Global Ethic Institute extends far beyond the university community and aims to have an impact on the world as a whole (…): to strive for a world in which people are guided by binding norms, ideals, and goals.«

To implement Hans Küng’s concept of a global ethic, the Global Ethic Foundation was established in Tübingen in 1995; it is dedicated to this mission through a wide range of projects and activities. The Global Ethic project, initiated by the Swiss theologian Hans Küng, aims to establish shared values and standards that unite us across the boundaries of religions, cultures, and nations. The Global Ethic Foundation is an operational foundation that uses its income, as well as donations and other contributions, primarily to finance its own projects. It is the sponsor of the Global Ethic Institute.

Prof. Dr. Hans Küng
Founder of the Global Ethic Project
»From the very beginning, the business community—along with religious leaders, policymakers, and educators—has been at the heart of our efforts regarding the Global Ethic project.«

The Karl Schlecht Foundation (KSG) is a nonprofit foundation focused on “good leadership.” Its guiding principle is to improve leadership in business and society through humanistic values. With this in mind, it supports projects aimed at the personal development of young people and aspiring leaders in the areas of ethics, leadership, entrepreneurship, culture, and technology. It is committed to the generous and long-term support of the Global Ethic Institute—a project close to the heart of the founder, Karl Schlecht.

Prof. h.c. Dr. h.c. Dipl. Ing. Karl Schlecht
Founder of the Karl Schlecht foundation
»True leadership success is based on trust, sound decision-making, and a passion for what one does. This requires an active and productive focus on character development grounded in a humanistic education.«
