About our
Institute

The Global Ethic Institute is a research and educational institution focused on business, ethics, and society at the University of Tübingen. Its goal is to strengthen ethical business practices grounded in global responsibility and social cohesion—through research, teaching, and practical dialogue.

As part of the “Global Ethic Project” in the tradition of Hans Küng, the Institute addresses the following question in various ways: How can we shape the economy and society so that we can live and work together in diversity on a habitable Earth? To this end, we engage with academia, the public, and businesses.

The Institute is a learning space for topics around economic policy and social ethics, resilient democracies, and for values-based corporate governance.  The Institute’s team is committed to fostering a culture of sustainable economic activity for our shared world, the environment, and future generations.

The Institute’s director is the economist and theologian Professor Dr. Nils Goldschmidt.

The Institute is supported by the Global Ethic Foundation and funded by the charitable Karl Schlecht Foundation.

Our
Values

For people to live together harmoniously and constructively in a diverse world, all human communities need a foundation of shared ethical values. This applies to families, schools, and businesses just as much as it does to society at large. Today, in an era of global markets, international political and economic relations, and increasingly multicultural societies, there is a need for a fundamental consensus on values and norms that applies regardless of culture, religion, or nationality.

The idea of a unifying global ethic traces back to the internationally renowned theologian Prof. Dr. Hans Küng. After years of foundational research and through his empirical studies around the globe, he observed that all world religions and philosophical-humanistic traditions already share fundamental values and moral principles. The Golden Rule, for example—which states that one should treat others as one would like to be treated oneself—is found in all traditions. Likewise, the principle that all people must be treated humanely.

Hans Küng advocated for a basic ethical consensus as well as a vibrant interfaith dialogue, and in 1993 he spearheaded the Global Ethic Declaration before the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago. He founded the Global Ethic Foundation and increasingly devoted himself to the major issues of the global economy and politics, which is why he warmly welcomed the establishment of our institute.
