Prof. Dr. Nils Goldschmidt delivered a keynote address on the interplay between social cohesion and economic development at the 8. World Congress der International Society of Business, Economics, and Ethics (ISBEE) in Yaoundé, Cameroon. This year’s congress was held under the theme “Rethinking Business Ethics from the Global South: Local Insights, Global Impact” and brought together scholars from around the world to discuss perspectives on global business ethics from the Global South
In his plenary lecture, “You’ll Never Grow Alone: How Social Cohesion and Economic Development Reinforce Each Other,” Nils Goldschmidt presented key research findings based on many years of work at the University of Siegen and the Global Ethic Institute. The focus was on how social cohesion and economic development reinforce each other and what significance these interactions have for sustainable social development. The presentation generated great interest and served as the starting point for an intensive exchange with the international audience of experts.
In addition to the keynote address, Nils Goldschmidt participated in the conference’s doctoral seminar alongside Theo Bolin Simon. In a master class, they discussed a joint study by the Global Ethic Institute and the Roman Herzog Institute on the relationship between economic performance and social cohesion with doctoral students from various countries. Using case studies from countries in sub-Saharan Africa, they explored the opportunities and limitations of international comparative studies and highlighted the importance of local contexts for interpreting empirical data.
The discussion made it clear that global rankings can provide valuable insights, but their significance can only be fully realized by taking historical, political, and social contexts into account. The exchange with the international early-career researchers also provided important impetus for the further development of their joint research.
Thanks to financial support from the nonprofit Karl Schlecht Foundation, the Global Ethic Institute was able to facilitate the participation of three African doctoral candidates in the congress by awarding travel grants. In doing so, the Institute helped strengthen international academic dialogue and bring diverse perspectives to the debates on global business ethics.
The ISBEE World Congress is one of the most important international conferences in the field of business and corporate ethics. This year’s conference in Yaoundé impressively underscored the importance of a global exchange on ethical issues in business and society—while also providing an important platform for bringing the World Ethos Institute’s research into the international dialogue.
