The world order is changing. The attempt of old and new powers to extend their spheres of influence, the emergence of global risk regimes, the forces of economic development and the struggle of civil societies for recognition are all factors in the historic evolution towards a new world order. At the core of these transformations are questions about values and principles – what is good and bad, right and wrong, just and unjust, or legitimate and illegitimate. Different cultures, religions, and ideologies are giving different answers, in effect contesting accepted norms and procedures of global governance, international law and human rights law. In this seminar, students will decide amongst themselves which three contemporary examples of fundamental normative challenges of a globalized world they want to prepare for discussion in two sessions each. In a structured discussion, we will learn how to treat and judge different aspects in the light of different theoretical approaches. How will we live together in a shared world?
