On February 17, 2023, a ceremony was held at the Universidad de San Ignacio de Loyola in honor of the academic achievements of Prof. Dr. Dr. Ulrich Hemel. The ceremony was hosted by the USIL University‘s Department of Economics, which awarded Hemel the degree of Doctor honoris causa in recognition of his achievements in the fields of economics and social sciences as well as in intercultural dialogue. The Global Ethic Institute is delighted with its director for the recognition of his commitment to a global business ethic.
In the course of a cooperative trip that took the theologian and entrepreneur from Peru to Mexico and Colombia, Ulrich Hemel was awarded an honorary doctorate in a ceremonial act.
The conferment was preceded by the presentation of the Spanish translation of Ulrich Hemel’s work “Critique of Digital Reason” (Crítica de la Razón Digital), supervised by the same university. The great interest of that university in social market economy as a peace project as well as questions of the humane design of digital spaces was reflected in the high effort that was made for the organization of the ceremony. This included the ritual marching-in of all academic dignitaries in gowns and birettas, accompanied by the playing and singing of the Peruvian national anthem.
The ceremony was attended by very distinguished guests. Worth mentioning from a German perspective are the greetings of the German Ambassador Sabine Bloch, the former German Ambassador in Berlin Elmer Schialer, the Grand Chancellor of the University Ramiro Salas and the Peruvian Minister of Education Oscar Manuel Becerra Tresierra.
After the ceremony, various discussions were held with representatives of the academic, political and economic life of Peru. A tour of the impressive, modern USIL University was also part of the program. Impressive were among other things the financial-economical department with Bloomberg monitors, the faculty for hotel trade, catering trade and tourism with chances for qualified forces, which are looked for also in Germany, the faculty for health economy, which wants to take up German as a foreign language, in order to qualify among other things care workers and the university-own faculty for communication sciences with its own clay/tone and picture studio for medium productions in radio and TV.
Ulrich Hemel and the team of the Global Ethic Institute are looking forward to further cooperation with the USIL University and are hopeful about the future.
